Even we are up to $3.39, at that price it makes the ride to Vail almost not worth it...almost.

Apparently over 26 years - not even the life of an automoblie. Based on Brand spanky new "regulations" that force the auto makers to somehow develop technology that averages 55 mpg - which is basically a money loss when you factor in the cost of this "technology" being bundled into the price of a new vehicle, along the cost of reformulated fuels that they will need to run on (cars don't just magically double in efficiency - Big Oil will need to completely retool all of their refineries - guess who pays for that)... This guy either has no clue what he is talking about, or is a pathological swindler in the back pocket of the auto industry. You guess which one.

reminds me of when people would go buy a second or third car to 'save money on gas'. but what about the car payment? i'd ask. usually got a funny look for that.

then there was a lady i knew who was shopping for a new truck. going to get a diesel she said. i asked why? they get better mileage. but, i replied, you pay about 5k more for a diesel, and then the fuel costs more. if you do the math, i bet you'd have to run a lot of miles before you'd even come close to making up the difference.
yeah, she bought a diesel.

it's not saving a damn thing if you spend more to cut back on gas. and people wonder why there are no new refineries in the works. is any industry under more constant attack than the petroleum industry?
everyone reading this, take stock of what you've got in your house. look at all that plastic, it's everywhere. now tell me how we're going to cut back on oil?

Louisiana has more than its fair share of refineries. Look at the area along the Mississippi between Baton Rouge and New Orleans and you will get an idea. Here is a list of U.S. refineries by output. http://www.eia.gov/neic/rankings/refineries.htm Three of the top five are in Louisiana.

There was a former member of the Louisiana legislature who introduced legislation every year to enact an oil processing tax. It would yield about a billion dollar in revenue for the state each year, with the cost mostly passed on to consumers out of state. The oil and gas lobby were able to stop it each year. Louisiana has been in a severe budget crunch the last few years because, thanks to legacy of Huey Long, there are too many people here who expect state government to pay for everything under the sun. If that legislation were to be introduced right now, it would probably pass, and there is little the rest of the country could do about it because there are too many hoops to jump through to build new refineries in this country.
