Could you respond to accusations by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and other groups that the horses used on Luck were too unhealthy, or too old to have been subjected to the rigors of weekly TV production? That they were sometimes pushed too hard, or that they were doped up to make it through production and hit deadlines? Milch: Just to pursue this a little bit, I was embarrassed for PETA when I read some of their statements, [of ] the savage ignorance of the realities of what we were doing ... They talked about 5-year olds being too old to race. A 5-year-old is in the absolute prime of his racing life! They [said] that the horses were found to have been medicated at necropsy. Well, of course they were [found to have been] medicated at necropsy. They’d been medicated in the aftermath of being injured! This was beyond irresponsibility, the distortion that took place in order to make those accusations.

![]() It is thoroughly disgusting to me that PETA still gets any "cred" whatsoever as an "animal welfare" group.

"cred" is in the eye of the beholder, and this eye doesn't see any cred at all in PETA.

![]() Of course PETA doesn't have credibility. You can tell by how they twist (or choose to willfully misunderstand) the facts. I thought the turf war between the AHA and PETA was interesting to hear about on ATR. I know who I'm siding with.
This is a pretty thorough interview, and I'm still going through it, but I have an immense respect for Mann and Milch. I thought highly of them before, but my opinion of them as human beings and as professionals just went up even more. Do we know what is happening to the horses that were used? They mentioned how they deliberately selected slower horses, and that the horses were treated better than they'd probably have otherwise been (we all know it's not the cushiest of situations for a low level claimer). If it's mentioned later in the article, sorry. I was just wondering. |

![]() It is just a travesty this series has been cancelled. I believe most of peta's money goes to their own salaries.
