I've had many pet snakes, and none of them were mean.

I've caught and handled wild rattlesnakes bare handed, and was never bitten.

Now, had you said as mean as a drunk New Yorker, that would have been better context!

I trust them more than people.

The first one was when I was sitting on a rock fishing a creek. This big mutha (6 foot long) swam right to me, so I thought the best option was to catch it and move it away from me.


The other one was in a neighbors garage. It was tiny, having just been born. No rattles on it even. That little guy was super chill, and I just let him crawl around my hands without restraint. My mother (I was about thirteen years old) wanted me to kill it.

i do know he was not on the tour when we went there a few years ago-he won't behave for the guests.

Not that long ago they had Slew, Rahy and Dynaformer.

Now they have Big Brown.

At least it's not as big a drop as what happened to Claiborne.

They went from having Danzig, Mr. P, Nijinsky, Secretariat, Seeking the Gold, Private Account and more, all at roughly the same time, to Arch and Blame.

I don't think they rode Dynaformer at TC (like they did their other stallions for exercise) as he was just a tough guy. He got runners.

We were lucky enough to go on a private tour in 2008, and they brought Dynaformer out for us. It was funny -- I'd heard the stories about his temperament, but we walked right up to him. I guess he was having a good day.

I wish the photo was better, but the barn was dark and the backlighting didn't help.

We also saw Smarty Jones in the barn, and got to talk to and pat old Wild Again out in his paddock. The office, barns and grounds were all immaculate -- it's a wonderful farm.

I visited him about 10 years ago and thethick metal bars at the bottom of his stall door were pushed outward from his kicks. I was told that he had recently bit off the finger of his handler. He was quite the character.

Dynaformer comes from a long pedigree of notably "mettlesome and aggressive" horses.

I remember reading a book that had at least a few chapters on Big d and his stud mannerisms and charachteristics. It was really entertaining and explained at least one reason his nickname was "Big D".
