Default Gutierrez shifting tack to Woodbine

Did anyone catch on to this nugget at the end of the Canadian press story, that Gutierrez is headed to Woodbine after the Belmont, win or lose?

http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/Canada/201...ierrez-120601/

This US-media is picking up on this story tomorrow.

Smart move imo. The high purses, bad jock colony (again, imo) and his main charge taking a well deserved freshening.

I'm sure he'll be scurrying back n forth quite a bit this summer.

Not to Sure that is a well thought out move, He needs to look beyond this year, so Many uncertainties surrounding Woodbine Right now. Seems to me that some Trainers and Jocks are making back up Plans to get out of there if they lose all the slot Money. Right now I am not sure if any one know's exactly what is going to happen ???

Not a move I would advise if his goal is to ride on the worlds stages. Can make plenty of money and live in a truly GREAT city. However, Derby and Breeders Cup mounts come from NY, FLA, KY, and CA. Must be playing in those leagues to be relevant on those days.

Is it possible that he has work visa issues and therefore is not able to work/live in the U.S. on a permanent basis? I mean, his stock is as high as it's ever been (and likely ever will be), it seems like a strange time to pick up and move to the relative obscurity of Woodbine.

Actually he is applying to become a Canadian citizen so he has to be living and working in Canada. He has no visa issues with US. Question I have is, when did he tell Ivan Puhich about his plans.

I can't imagine that this decision was made out of fear of breaking into the Southern Calfornia jockey colony. I would have thought taking a shot at riding in a top circuit would have been his best move.

A Tweet from Tim Layden...

Tim Layden rated Pepper's Pride a better horse than Medaglia D' Oro and Bernardini.

Luckily for Creative Cause, Rosario didn't misjudge the pace.

That's basically what I meant, that if he is a permanent resident of Canada he isn't able to live and work in the U.S. indefinitely, and if he had a 6-month work visa and came here just before the Santa Anita meet on Dec. 26, that visa would be about to expire, in that case the move would make sense. Just speculation on my part, I have no idea what his legal status is.

Q. Mario, your plans for the future, are you going back to Canada and making your base going forward after this?

MARIO GUTIERREZ: Since I came to Santa Anita, my goal was break into California circuit racing. So after all of this is done, I'm going to go back and make California my base and see how it is.

THE MODERATOR: And I imagine Doug is just fine with that plan?

DOUG O'NEILL: Awesome.

From Thursday's press conference. . .

As opposed to Jerry bailing all those nags of Frankel's out all the time and dragging them them across the finish line? Jesus that guy is full of himself.
