Default Odd entry

Can't ever recall seeing a 3-year-old filly earn black type in a non-state bred stake worth 75K against older -- and run in a $7,500 maiden claiming race all in the same week. That's what Maid On a Mission is entered to do today at Ellis Park.

According to the condition book at Ellis Park -- entry date for this race was July 5th.

Two back at Keeneland, this horse bolted over the fence in a race where the top two finishers both came back to win next out, and followed that up by running 1st and 2nd in the Grade 3 Regret Stakes at Churchill.

It's entered in a dirt sprint no less -- when it's obviously bred to be a turf router.

He can't seriously be running her, can he?

I remember when Greg Gilchrist entered High Resolve in a $16,000 maiden claiming race before she debuted. High Resolve was the outright fastest unblinkered filly at the OBS April 2yo sale. She brought 135K... A LOT of money for a filly at OBS April. Gilchrist entered her to make the race go, scratched her, ran her back in a MSW race where she won under a full nelson hold by 9 lengths going 5.5 furlongs.

High Resolve won 7 of her first 10 races, including 5 stakes races, the Sunshine Millions sprint among them. She made over 468K.

Probably won't make it around the track, either that, or wins by daylight...

Must have been some serious animals in that stakes race for her to go off at 16-1 after losing in a MSW at 107-1 by going apesh!t nuts.

How much do you think this happens? I've heard of it before, but only every once in a while. Not enough that I have paid much attention to it.

I don't see it much at tracks that have plenty of horses and are creative with the way they write their races. Tampa for instance uses the "condition book" as a "very loose suggestion book" and mainly writes off the overnights depending on what they have available, thus you rarely have a need for this.

A real pain in the asz for trainers and owners who train up to a certain race only to have it replaced, but good for bettors as it helps to insure fuller fields.

Other places, that write primarily from the book, may find themselves a horse short for a certain condition and rather than scrap the race and try to write a different one from the overnights, may ask a trainer if they have one for the entry box to get a race to go.

I owned 50% of a horse once named Dixie Doodle for Craig Cox in 2001.

The horse came out of a good 2nd place finish with a career ending injury. Three weeks later, I get a stable mail alert saying he was entered in a race at MNR and had post #2.

He was entered with the intent of scratching, his father Loren Cox had one in, and they would cap the fields at 10 at MNR. One less horse for Loren to beat. The field was reduced to nine. It seemed silly to me.

Much more frequently at some tracks, horses are entered with no intent of ever running to make races go. This was a habitual problem at Presque Isle. An owner named Ben Mondello was basically orchestrating his own horse races on a handfull of occasions for the better part of a season.

You'd see a starter alw scrap up seven entries -- and they'd scratch down to a field of 3 with Mondello's horse 1/5 against two local rats. He seemed to be using his connections with other trainers at the Mid Atlantic circuits very well.
