Default Mitt Romney's disastrous day

After a press release yesterday announcing he was coming off the campaign trail due to concerns over Hurricane Sandy victims, Romney lied and was back on the campaign trail today doing multiple campaign events in Ohio.

Only, Romney said "it wasn't campaigning", it was "Storm Relief Rallies".

Romney asked everyone who attended his campaign stop - whoops, "Disaster relief rally" to bring canned food for hurricane victims.

(Note: the Red Cross begs people not to contribute canned goods, clothes, etc., as they are impossibly difficult to deal with and expensive to distribute. They prefer cash)

The Romney pool reporters were having none of this lie - people were showing up, they were regular campaign rallies, and Romney was handing out "Obama You're Fired" tee shirts.

The press were handed passes for the "Romney Victory Tour" of today's events.

Romney, who announced during the debates that he would eliminate FEMA, was today asked 14 times by his press pool to comment on that. This was videotaped and recorded. Romney literally ignored the questions, and is refusing to interact with his own press pool this last week.

Romney has thus been crucified mercilessly by his press pool and the public all over Twitter and the internet today (this afternoon) for lying about his campaigning (campaigning after expressing apparently false concern for Sandy victims) for refusing to answer questions about FEMA, for collecting canned goods as an excuse for campaigning, etc.

Mitt's other problem today was that he has recently lied about Jeep moving jobs to China (they are not) - then, after the auto company said that's completely false, sent the Romney campaign a letter saying so, and released a letter to the public saying so (they are actually expanding jobs in Ohio at that plant) and using the word "lie", Romney released an ad reiterating the lie. Auto company workers have been calling Jeep asking if Romney's ad is true, if they are losing their jobs - it is a 100% made-up Romney lie.

Today Romney was crucified for that obvious, deliberate lie in most major Ohio newspapers, and nationally. His campaign is sticking with the "we won't let factcheckers dictate our campaign" response: "we lie with impunity, and eff you who don't like it".

Romney has zero morals or ethics. Simply zero.

Default Romney press pool turns on Romney today

The Republican presidential nominee and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, suspended all campaign events on Monday evening and Tuesday "out of sensitivity" to the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

But Tuesday Romney was campaigning as usual at the scheduled Ohio rallies, merely calling them "Storm Relief Rallies"

Even top Romney adviser Stuart Stevens allowed that the campaign video playing at the "relief" event was a bit much. "I don't know how it happened," he said, adding: "Some volunteer just pressed play, I guess."

Mitt Romney refused to answer reporters' questions about how he would handle the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), after a Tuesday "storm relief" event in Ohio for Hurricane Sandy.

From the Romney pool report:

Quote:
TV pool asked Romney at least five times whether he would eliminate FEMA as president/what he would do with FEMA. He ignored the qs but they are audible on cam. The music stopped at points and the qs would have been audible to him.
A follow-up report noted the specific questions Romney ignored, as he was collecting hurricane supplies following his event:

Quote:
"Gov are you going to eliminate FEMA?" a print pooler shouted, receiving no response.

Wires reporters asked more questions about FEMA that were ignored.

Romney kept coming over near pool to pick up more water. He ignored these questions:

"Gov are you going to see some storm damage?"

"Gov has [New Jersey Gov.] Chris Christie invited you to come survey storm damage?"

"Gov you've been asked 14 times, why are you refusing to answer the question?"

There are two sides to every story. Even though The Washington Post doesn't like Romney and they didn't like the ad, they admitted that the ad was "factually defensible" and "technically correct".

In addition, even liberals are now admitting that Obama lied about Romney's position on the auto bail-out. David Letterman, of all people, was one of the people that admitted that Obama lied. Letterman who is a die-hard democrat was very disappointed with Obama over that.

Here is Letterman's quote: "Now, I don't care whether you're Republican or Democrat, you want your president to be telling the truth. You want the contender to be lying. (Maddow and the audience laugh). And so when we found out today or soon thereafter that, in fact, President Obama was not telling the truth about what was excerpted from that op-ed piece, I felt discouraged."

Both candidates have been telling half-truths every day. That is basically what propaganda is, a half-truth. They tell you something that is partially true, but it is very misleading because they leave out a key piece of information. Both candidates try to intentionally mislead you with these half-truths.

I admit that Romney does it all the time. But Obama does it all the time too. If one guy constantly lied and the other guy was very honest, then that would be something worth talking about. But considering that both these guys do it like crazy, it's kind of silly to make a big deal out of it. They both do it like crazy. If you're going to condemn one candidate for it, then you need to condemn the other too.

The Obama campaign was trying to fool old people into thinking that Romney and Ryan want to take away their Medicare, when in fact the Obama campaign knows that the Romney plan would not affect anyone over 55 years old. That is a perfect example of what these campaigns do. They try to scare people by misstating the other candidates position.

Yet the President of GM called the ad a clear falsehood.

Oh - and then there was the President of Chrysler-Jeep:
------------------

Chrysler CEO smacks down Romney's Jeep-to-China lies

Mitt Romney's relentless lying about Jeep moving production jobs to China has spurred Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne to push back, making it clear in no uncertain terms that Chrysler is committed to keeping and creating those jobs in the United States. Because of the "public debate" over the Jeep jobs, "I feel obliged to unambiguously restate our position," Marchionne wrote in an email to employees. "Jeep production will not be moved from the United States to China."

Marchionne's email cites a litany of examples of Chrysler's commitment to building Jeeps and creating jobs in the U.S., beginning with the fact that "U.S. production of our Jeep models has nearly tripled" since 2009.
Quote:
We will invest more than $1.7 billion to develop and produce the next generation Jeep SUV, the successor of the Jeep Liberty — including $500 million directly to tool and expand our Toledo Assembly Complex and will be adding about 1,100 jobs on a second shift by 2013.

At our Jefferson North Assembly Plant, where we build the Jeep Grand Cherokee, we have created 2,000 jobs since June 2009 and have invested more than $1.8 billion.

In Belvidere, where we build two Jeep models, we have added two shifts since 2009 resulting in an additional 2,600 jobs.
No wonder Marchionne felt the need to write this: Romney is trying to convince Jeep workers that they are in danger of losing their jobs, pouring money into ads claiming just that. Trying to use lies to frighten people into voting for you goes beyond cynicism to being incredibly callous—something that's in line with everything we know about Mitt Romney's approach to working people. As far as he's concerned, they're backdrops or pawns or easy cuts to make. It's how he's running, and it's how he'd govern.

And did you read the part where Letterman's false assumption was corrected?

Guess not

His assumption was not false. It was true. Rachel Maddow was the guest and she tried to give some more information to defend Obama, but I don't think she really succeeded. Like in almost all of these cases, there were half-truths involved. Obama knocked Romney because Romney suggested that the auto companies should declare bankruptcy, when in fact Obama let the companies declare bankruptcy. Granted, Obama's plan was slightly different from Romney, but Obama didn't mention that the Obama plan called for the companies to go bankrupt. How misleading is that?

Obama is pointing his finger at Romney and blasting Romney for wanting the auto companies to declare bankruptcy, when in fact Obama's plan was for the auto companies to declare bankruptcy. The major difference in the plans was that Obama's plan called for government help after bankruptcy. Romney's plan did not.

Yet there is much more truthful information not related by Maddow at the time regarding Letterman's statement that shows it to be false.

Romney goes off-road with the truth

By Dana Milbank, Tuesday, October 30, 7:20 PM

Mitt Romney spoke to supporters in the Ohio town of Defiance last week, but his words came from the twin cities of Duplicity and Deception.

“I saw a story today that one of the great manufacturers in this state, Jeep, now owned by the Italians, is thinking of moving all production to China,” the Republican presidential nominee proclaimed, referring to the automaker President Obama saved from dissolution with taxpayer funds. “I will fight for every good job in America.”

The truth, however, was roughly 180 degrees opposite Romney’s claim.

Chrysler, which owns the Jeep label, has added about 7,000 jobs in North America since it emerged from bankruptcy proceedings in June 2009, and it continues to expand its U.S. workforce and to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in American plants.

Romney’s fiction was apparently based on a misreading of a Bloomberg News report a few days earlier, which said that Chrysler would resume production in China for the first time since parent Fiat SpA bought the company — in addition to Chrysler’s production in Michigan, Illinois and Ohio.

“Let’s set the record straight: Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China,” Chrysler executive Gualberto Ranieri wrote in a statement, using italics for emphasis. “A careful and unbiased reading of the Bloomberg take would have saved unnecessary fantasies and extravagant comments.” Ranieri said the conclusion that it was moving all production to China was “a leap that would be difficult even for professional circus acrobats.”

But in the game of trickery, Romney is exceedingly dexterous.

A couple of days later, his campaign came out with an ad in Ohio repeating the allegation in a way that tweaked the wording to make it technically true, while continuing to give the same false impression:

“Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China. Mitt Romney will fight for every American job.”

Romney’s ongoing deception led Chrysler’s CEO to send a letter Tuesday to the company’s jittery employees, assuring them that “Jeep production will not be moved from the United States” and that “It is inaccurate to suggest anything different.”

The restored production in China was to avoid huge tariffs on vehicles imported into China.

The fast-and-loose with Jeep points to a troubling Romney instinct: When the stakes are high, as they are for him in must-win Ohio, the truth is often the first casualty.

That is exactly what both these campaigns do. They say things that are "technically true" but with such omissions and in such a misleading way that it gives people a false impressions. That is my definition of a half-truth. Welcome to politics! That is what we get every day from both these campaigns.

About two months ago, Biden said something that was worse than a half-truth. It was an outright lie. He told a group of mainly African-Americans, that republicans "want to put you all back in chains". I've heard Biden say some pretty ridiculous things but I think this takes the cake.

Romney Wants Dwarf Vote

The Governor does not discriminate against dawrfs as does The Egyptian."I love dwarfs. They count for a full vote even though they are itty bitty, but as a fine Mormon....I want them all to know that I will fight for their right to be seen.

I mean heard."

Seriously? The road to the WH goes through the Ed Sullivan Theatre? Well, I know you're funnin' us, but you should be aware that Willard won't appear on Letterman's show, so that should seal his fate and cause him to resume his career as a venture (vulture?) capitalist shortly.

Yes, there's plenty of spin regarding Libya. Indeed

This is just sad:

Romney campaign went to Wal-Mart, bought $5000 worth of "food and relief supplies" to help stage his own "relief rally" in Ohio.

Dear god. This man lies about everything. Every. Thing.

Chris Christy's press conference should have ended with. This ad paid for by Barack Obama for president. Nothing but glowing endorsement of Obama's handling of this situation. Maybe he figures he now wants to run for president in 2016 which will be infinitely easier against an unkown democrat then the existing president. That said accessing the internet using a generator while tethered to my cellphone at pre 1990 speeds sucks. At this point I am 10-1 against making a breeders cup bet

Maybe Christie's looking for a cabinet position in Barry's second reign? Maybe a new position created just for him, Secretary of Late Night Snacking?

Wishing you luck getting those BC bets in.

That's not good

I think Christie, for all his posturing, bullying ways (I am absolutely no fan), just loves his state, and has been speaking honestly and sincerely, and apolitically, the past 48 hours.

No politics. I think you are seeing a guy just doing his job. I applaud Chris Christie the last couple of days. Well done.

Christy has really impressed me with his handling of the situation. I am now willing to look past his treatment of the horse racing industry and will consider him as my candidate in 2016 at this early point. On another note I found a spot in my house with excellent cell reception and was able to download PP's. I think I am closer to even money to play my usual amount and 1/10 to make a bet. Only fly in ointment is that I have to powerdown the generator and check oil and restart it. Will be nervous about it until it is running again as they are now talking upwards of us being down for 2 weeks.
