Terrazas sounds like he would give a great interview on ATR, too.

Colonial Affair Dies in Argentina
by Blood-Horse Staff

Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Colonial Affair died on the morning of April 23 at Haras El Paraiso in the Buenos Aires province of Argentina. The 23-year-old son of Pleasant Colony—Snuggle, by Nijinsky II, was shipped to Haras El Paraiso in 2003. He was previously retired from stallion duty.

Colonial Affair helped Julie Krone make history in 1993 by becoming the first female jockey to win the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) and first to win any of the Triple Crown races. He won three other graded stakes—the Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I), Whitney Handicap (gr. I) and the Excelsior Handicap (gr. II)—all in 1994.

Out of 20 career starts, Colonial Affair won seven times and placed in another seven races. His career earnings totaled $1,635,228. He has sired 15 U.S. stakes winners and 20 worldwide, including the Argentine group I winner Cafrune, who was bred by El Paraiso and has won 15 stakes to date.

Not that it matters, but Storm Cat was seven years older than Colonial Affair ( he was 23 ).

Stallion Captain Steve Dies in Japan
By Blood-Horse Staff

Captain Steve, the 2001 Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) winner trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, died April 21 in Japan as a result of acute heart failure. The death of the 16-year-old son of Fly So Free was reported by Kate Hunter, communications director at Japan's Paca Paca Farm.

A U.S. grade I winner every year he raced, Captain Steve scored his biggest win overseas in the $6 million Dubai World Cup.

Captain Steve, who was produced from the Vice Regent mare Sparkling Delite, won nine of 25 starts and earned $6,828,356 for owner Mike Pegram. He was purchased for $70,000 at the 1998 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky yearling sale.

He won the Hollywood Futurity (gr. I) at 2, the Swaps Stakes (gr. I) over subsequent Horse of the Year Tiznow at 3, and the Donn Handicap (gr. I) as a 4-year-old before his World Cup win. He won eight stakes and placed in 10 others, including the 2000 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I).

Upon retirement following his 4-year-old campaign, Captain Steve was sold to the Japan Racing Association for a reported $5 million and stood his entire breeding career in Japan, most recently at Schichinohe Stallion Station.

Sad day for the industry and for the people around these horses, though.
You know more about Aussie racing than I could ever hope to.

You're knowledgable, witty... sorry but I know for a fact you're a nice guy.

I wish you'd talk about racing. About stuff like you used to. I think you were the first one to do a Living Legends thread, the first to do a favorite international racing thread, I remember you wishing Crisford et al at Godolphin a merry Christmas (it was funny), your "customer is always riot" thread, you wishing a happy birthday to the Aussie horses (it was cute), your memories of Mustard (didn't he finally retire?).

Maybe you could find a happy medium and still make fun of me but talk about stuff that's interesting too (?). Don't worry you can still pretend to be mean! (It is getting a little old though).

Condolences to the connections.

Default HBO Real Sports Segment to feature the late Storm Cat

HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel will have a feature Tuesday on the state of the Kentucky thoroughbred breeding industry.

A Bernard Goldberg segment entitled Out to Stud will, according to a news release, recount the death last month of the legendary sire Storm Cat, the recession and market drop of a few years ago and where things are now.

“After Storm Cat retired, attention turned to the engaging Zenyatta, who became the first filly to win the Breeder’s Cup Classic in 2009. Unlike Storm Cat, Zenyatta does not get paid to reproduce, but her offspring are the most talked-about in the industry,” the news release states.

What this points out (besides the fact that the highest profile recent stars of racing have been female) is the lack of a dominant Kentucky stallion or stallions that towered above the market in the way that Storm Cat and A.P. Indy did. It’ll be interesting to see what Real Sports says to a mass audience about the business.

The initial air time is 10 p.m. Tuesday with numerous repeats on HBO, HBO2, on demand and HBO’s mobile app.

That's because nobody in their right mind would pay $250K+ to breed these days. Bernardini, Tapit, Distorted Humor, Medaglia D'Oro, and Street Cry all demand $100K+ and I'd consider any of those dominant. Hell, the winners of the first two TC legs are by "elite" sires Awesome Again (75K) and Malibu Moon (70K). That isn't cheap.

Miner's Mark (23), first foal out of Personal Ensign, also passed away recently.

I have a friend that worked with Miner's Mark as a stallion; he was very fond of the horse. I asked him to guest post on my blog about Miner's Mark:
