Default St Nicholas Abbey suffers career ending injury

St Nicholas Abbey set for critical surgery

Quote:
The six-year-old suffered a fractured pastern during a routine piece of work at Ballydoyle on Tuesday morning as he was going through his final preparation for Saturday's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, a race for which Europe's all-time leading money-earner had been expected to be favourite.

Coolmore Stud tweeted: "St Nicholas Abbey suffered a serious career ending injury at Ballydoyle this morning, vets are currently attending to him.

"We hope to save him for a career at stud."

A later update added: "St Nicholas Abbey is currently in a comfortable condition at Fethard Equine Hospital, where he is scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning."

Oh no. Wishing him all the best. He was a wonderful horse to watch. I was lucky enough to see him in the flesh in one of his Coronation Cup wins - a truly stunning galloper. Really hoping they can save him.

I am surprised that the Coolmore's first quote regarding the horse's future was about saving him for his 800-mares-a-season stud duty.
i'm surprised that you're surprised!

wasn't it coolmore who retired a horse at two to stand at stud because a similarly bred stallion died?
