When Atheism Becomes a Religion

Atheism by definition is the disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of God or gods.

I recently heard an interview with outspoken atheist Penn Jellette of the comedy team Penn and Teller compare atheism as a religion to not collecting stamps being a hobby.

Recently atheism seems to have been bastardized into a religion whose sole purpose is rejecting all other religion, christianity in particular, using courts and their rulings as their weapon of choice.

That makes about as much sense, as those, including me, who don’t collect stamps creating a hobby whose sole activity is rejecting Philatelists.

Religion ~ an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods.

You say Atheists have been "bastardized into a religion", so given the ^^^definition of religion^^^ - at least according to Merriam-Webster online, what god or group of gods are they worshiping?


Or is this just semantics to try and make some kind of a point?

I'm not overly comfortable talking about religion on a horsie board, especially when my own views go back and forth, BUT I do know what you're saying here.

A couple of friends of mine are atheists and they are slowly becoming more hateful, militant, superior and hostile toward other groups than... well it's a very strange thing to witness. They lash out as if anyone is telling them what to believe.

Just an observation that doesn't matter at all but yes... I do understand your point.

As a raised Catholic (religious) (12 years schooling ALL boys HS) who has left (religion) but respects the church, with family members who 'consider' themselves catholic (religious) going to some GED equivalent CCD on Saturdays when they could make it for 5 years.

While listening to them every holiday. I sometimes cheer the atheist militant hostile side. Especially when they talk of abortion being equivalent to murder
