Stallions that stand for a private fee??

What is up with this? Last year Kingmambo stood for 300k and now he is standing for a private fee, does this mean they are jacking people in private or don't want to announce what they are charging because they are lowering the price or only being very selective with what mares they are choosing?

kingmambo has sucked as a sire, was booked to the best brought in alot of high priced babies that have failed to much of anything

Surely you are mistaking Kingmambo for another Stallion. Going into this year he had sired 5 champions and 34 graded stake winners from 10 crops.

Seattle you are a disgrace.

Its been my experience that once a stallion reaches a certain age or has had some physical ailments that could *possibly* hamper the number of mares he could breed, stud fees are often listed as private.

He had some issues last year in the shed and didnt cover his usual number. My guess is, he'll probably see mostly mares of shareholders and a few select outside mares.

Thanks for answering, Balletto-- and Scav, thank you for asking the question-- I had been wondering exactly the same thing when I read that about Kingmambo last night.

Kingmambo had big arthritis problems last year and they had to take him off stud for awhile. The article I read said it was from repeated mountings putting stress on his back and neck. I remember thinking, "Who knew getting so much tail could cause such long-term damage?"

Typically, when a stud fee goes private it is also in an effort to weed out what the farm would consider to be "undesireable" matches as well. Sadler's Wells has been private for a number of years becasue of this. It is correct to say he will breed a more limited number of mares and as such they want them to be what they consider good matches. The fee will likely vary depending on how the farm likes the mare and also have a bunch of stipulations/options for getting out of the contract if he has trouble again this year.

Usually when a stallion starts going to a private fee it's because the horse is getting older and the books are reduced to a more quality over quantity. Kingmambo has had some physical problems and this is to help manage him better and longer.

This is true....also, some farms use Private fees kind of like restaurants use "Market" price on fish and other meals....it gives them the right to vary their asking fee based on demand and risk assessments, which are generally figured by the mare's credentials and how well the farm feels that mares crosses with the stallion...

He is very aware of how profilic of a sire Kingmambo has been.
id say he rivals Seeking The Gold as the most successful son of Mr P at stud.
