in other countries, kids die because there are no vaccines. here, kids get sick and some die because their parents are idiots.

Don't know but I'm sure it will be higher among men. And sorry but here comes a venting.

Had a good friend who for some time was ignoring symptoms of colon troubles, blood in stools, intermittent pain, only when he finally went in to the ER a colonoscopy revealed colon cancer however because of his colon's condition it had leaked causing sepsis putting a strain on his kidneys and liver.

He got over the sepsis or so they thought and started chemo to treat the colon cancer. His body immediately rejected the chemo, his kidneys stopped working and he suffered irreparable liver damage. His best outcome at that time was to get the kidneys working enough to allow chemo in an attempt to rid himself of cancer only to get on a liver transplant list.

It didn't work and two weeks ago to this day he was moved home and given one to two months to live. Perhaps for the best he lasted only two days, one taking visitors and the last day sleeping. He was only 46 and was one of those great guys you luckily meet from time to time. His nickname 'EZ' said it all.

Ladies and gentlemen especially the latter, visit a Dr. when you know something is wrong and take no day for granted.

Thanks Nicole, I think one of the hardest things was him writing on his own facebook page that Dr.'s had just told him he had 1 to 2 months to live and he was headed home to plan his funeral and get his financials in order. He ended with only 'unbelievable'.

When I saw him the day he got home it was apparent it was going to be days and not months. At least he got to spend his last two days on earth at home, looking out at the forest that served as his backyard, surrounded by family and friends including his best friend Lulu, his dog, who he hadn't seen in 6 weeks. And somehow it felt more like a coming home party rather than funeral or wake.

He did somehow die with a smile on his face and it was apparent he was at peace on his last day. But that wasn't surprising considering it was Captain EZ!

I'm glad he was able to leave this world surrounded by those who loved him. I think it's the best gift we can give people we love as they leave us- knowing they were loved while they were here. An aunt of mine died in '08 from breast cancer and when I visited her for the last time, she told me how the hospice worker, after yet another day filled with friends coming to visit her, commented, "Well, this is unusual. Usually they don't all show up until after you're gone."

(Off topic, but props to hospice. Our family is still friends with the hospice worker who worked with my mom, and that was over 30 years ago)
