Hips to Watch: Keeneland September Day 2
By Glenye Cain Oakford

Following is a selection of particularly interesting catalog pages for the sale's second day on Sept. 15:

Hip 245 $400k - Mill Ridge Sales agency consigns this Medaglia d'Oro half brother to 2011 Horse of the Year Havre de Grace, a three-time grade I winner and earner of more than $2.5 million. This March 25 foal's family also features such notables as classic winner Tonalist and champion sprinter Plugged Nickle, among numerous others.

Hip 251 $475k - This May 16 Speightstown filly is the second foal out of the young mare Embur's Song (Unbridled's Song), Canada's champion older mare in 2011. Lane's End, agent, is the consignor.

Hip 257 RNA - Dual grade I winner and millionaire Evening Jewel is the dam of this March 10 filly by Bernardini , and the yearling is her second foal. Aaron and Marie Jones field this lot via the Taylor Made Sales consignment.

Hip 258 $190k - Yet another half sibling to a grade I winner, this March 13 colt is by Birdstone . His dam, the Malibu Moon mare Evening Star, already has produced Stellar Wind, victorious in the Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I) earlier this year. She's won twice more since then, taking Santa Anita's Summertime Oaks (gr. II) and, more recently, the Torrey Pines Stakes (gr. III) by 4 1/2 lengths since the catalog was printed. St. George Sales agency consigns.

Hip 261 RNA - Airdrie Stud agency's Creative Cause colt has 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah on his catalog page, as he is a half brother to that runner's dam, Littleprincessemma. This April 10 yearling and Littleprincessemma both descend from Storm Cat on their sires' side and are out of the stakes-winning Ecliptical mare Exclusive Rosette. The Creative Cause colt also is a half brother to graded winner and grade I-placed Misty Rosette and to graded winner Storm Wolf.

Hip 302 RNA - One of four Galileo yearlings cataloged to the auction, this March 20 filly is a half sister to 2010 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Drosselmeyer and to grade I-placed Stage Luck. She's out of the dual grade I winner Golden Ballet and was foaled in Ireland. Hill 'n' Dale Sales consigns.

Hip 303 $250k - The Claiborne Farm agency's April 4 War Front filly out of Gold Vault is a half sister to Contested, winner of both the 2012 Acorn (gr. I) and Test (gr. I) Stakes, and a full sister to last season's Keeneland September co-sale-topper, the $2.2 million colt Air Vice Marshal.

Hip 304 $350k - Another War Front out of an accomplished young mare, this colt comes to the ring from Denali Stud's consignment. A March 10 foal, he's out of the millionaire multiple graded winner Gotta Have Her, by Royal Academy.

Hip 312 $310k - From Penn Sales agency, this May 14 colt is part of The Factor's initial crop of foals and is a half brother to 2012 Spinaway Stakes (gr. I) winner So Many Ways.

Hip 332 RNA - This colt is one of only four yearlings on offer here by the undefeated European champion Frankel, the only group of Frankel offspring to be offered at U.S. public auction this year. This March 31 colt, offered by the Lane's End agency, is out of graded winner India, a full sister to stakes-winner Sing Softly and a half sister to Pilfer, the dam of grade I winners To Honor and Serve and Angela Renee and to Elnaawi, a grade I-placed runner.

Hip 352 $330k - This Ghostzapper colt consigned by Claiborne Farm, agent, is a half brother to three-time grade I winner and current sire Zensational. Foaled last April 18, he is out of the Phone Trick stakes winner Joke, whose daughter Pun also is a stakes-producer, having foaled graded-placed stakes-winner Irish You Well.

Hip 362 $850k - This Feb. 5 Tapit colt is out of the young millionaire and five-time graded winner Keertana, by Johar. Offered by Denali Stud's agency, he is from the family of graded winner Diversy Harbor and Snow Top Mountain.

Hip 390 $130k - Darby Dan Sales agency offers Leaseholder's Lute, a March 4 colt by Midnight Lute who is a half brother to dual grade I winner Tough Tiz's Sis (herself the dam of grade II winner and grade I-placed Tiz Midnight) and graded-placed stakes-winner Golly Greeley. This colt is an Illinois-bred.

Hip 393 $170k - From the final crop by Unbridled's Song, this colt is a three-quarters brother to 2010 Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (gr. I) winner Unrivaled Belle. The Jan. 29 colt is owned by Edward A. Cox Jr., and consigned by the Eaton Sales agency.

Hip 401 OUT - This Hard Spun colt's catalog page hardly needed enhancement, but he got a flashy update when his full sister Hard Not to Like--already a grade I winner--won the Diana Stakes (gr. I) after the catalog's publication to become a multiple grade I winner. An Ontario-bred, this yearling is an April 18 foal consigned by agent Michael C. Byrne.

Hip 405 $360k - The Lane's End agency offers this full brother to 2011 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) and 2012 Apple Blossom Handicap (gr. I) winner Plum Pretty. A Feb. 4 foal, the son of Medaglia d'Oro —Liszy, by A.P. Indy is also from the family of grade I performer Secret Hello.

Hip 414 $800k - The Gainesway agency consigns this Malibu Moon half brother to 2009 Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old filly Rachel Alexandra. Bred by Heaven Trees Farm in Kentucky, the April 3 foal also is a half brother to winner Samantha Nicole, and the catalog page got even more spotlighting when Rachel Alexandra's Bernardini filly, Rachel's Valentina, broke her maiden by two lengths at Saratoga Race Course, then followed up with a win in the grade I Spinaway Stakes. Bernardini, like this yearling's sire, is by A. P. Indy.

Hip 417 $450k - This Distorted Humor colt has a two-time grade I winner for a dam, Love and Pride. The A.P. Indy mare who earned just under $1 million and won the 2012 Personal Ensign Handicap (gr. I) and Zenyatta Stakes (gr. I). This also is the family of Cara Rafaela, a grade I winner and the dam of classic winner and sire Bernardini. This colt, a Feb. 26 foal, is consigned by Denali Stud.

Hip 418 $700k - Like Hip 417, the Baccari Bloodstock agency's Tapit colt out of Lovely Regina (Deputy Minister) also descends from Bernardini's dam Cara Rafaela. But this March 25 foal is a half brother to graded winner Thiskyhasnolimit, by Sky Mesa. He's also the highest-priced pinhook prospect in this year's catalog, having been bought as a weanling for $520,000 at Keeneland's 2014 November breeding stock sale.

Hip 443 $1,000,000 - By Australian-based champion Fastnet Rock, this Jan. 26 filly is a three-quarters sister to European champion filly Peeping Fawn, now the dam of a group-placed runner in Sir John Hawkins. I) winners Rags to Riches and Jazil. The Hill 'n' Dale agency consigns.

Hip 452 $850k - From the first crop of Bodemeister , this March 4 filly is a half sister to Canadian juvenile champion and 2009 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Mine That Bird and to multiple grade I-winning millionaire Dullahan. She's consigned by the Betz Thoroughbreds, agent.

Hip 465 RNA - The first foal out of Mona de Momma, winner of 2010 Humana Distaff (gr. I), is this filly by War Front. Offered by the Lane's End agency, she is a March 20 foal whose pedigree also features Mr. Greeley and the stakes-winner and good producer Majestic Legend.

Hip 470 $275k - Offered by Stonereath Stud, this filly is a daughter of the young Arch sire Blame and is a half sister to last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IT) winner, Hootenanny. The April 27 foal's dam, the Hennessy mare More Hennessy, is a half sister to a grade I winner herself, Cat Moves.

Aside from the big names that are buying horses, the amazing acquisition of stock going on is by Gary & Mary West who through the first 7 days have bought 22 head for $5.1MM, an average purchase of $235k. (And ALL are colts).. Only JJ Crupi and John Ferguson have spent more.

Ben is just camped out signing tickets.

Biggest purchase so far was $500k for a Tiznow x Island Bound (Speightstown).

I looked through the pedigrees and nothing jumps out as to what they are "collecting"... a good bit of Unbridled's Song and Harlan's Holiday and they don't make those anymore.

Looks like maybe looking for good 2 turn horses based on the pedigrees? Have a Tapizar, couple of Super Savers, couple of Flatter's, a Giants Causeway?

It's really interesting.

pinhooking ventures is my guess. the sport looks like it's on the upswing, and more being bred. so, expect to see some of these back at an auction next year.
