What racing can learn from Fantasy Football

Marketing more or better is always a good idea. Well usually. But all this DFS stuff reminds me of how well PokerStars et al marketed until the rug got pulled out from underneath them.

I think the Contest aspect brings in a lot of attributes from Fantasy Sports, and that is probably why they are relatively popular.

Jockeys are not marketed enough. Even the casual fan will not even know American Pharoah's jockey

Yes we have superstar horses fans root for but they only last 1 or 2 years and sadly most never go head to head in a race. If they do, it will be one time.

Why do you say that? Poker wasn't legal but companies were allowing US players to play and the Feds cracked down. Fantasy sports is legal and would need a law change to make it illegal. way too much money to "lobby" against that happening.

I've seen multiple front page news articles on politicians inquiring about the legality of it since football season started...average Joe is getting involved..hitting a saturation point..telling ya the golden goose will only produce fir so long till the government f's it up.

Having horseracing as gamblings red headed stepchild and off the mainstream might actually be the best thing for racing..with the added attention comes the feds and scrutiny. Anyone know what became of the push with cost of wager tax witholdings tgat we pushed for months back?

Agree they will try to do something to get a slice or try to ban it. The pro leagues are all in bed with the companies which will buy them some time. Read an article,which has been taken down, that basically stated that large investors playing with computer programs are basically winning every week. The individual has basically a lottery style shot at winning with odds stacked astronomically against them.

Will be curious to see what the actual takeout turns out to be.

When the average Joe is coming up to me at work and asking me about it (cuz they know I'm a gambler) the writing is on the wall. If there wasn't a commercial every 30 seconds for it they might have been okay but there is waaaaay to much exposure right now for the powers that be not to take notice. A game of skill? Seriously? Sports betting has a better chance at being skill based then fantasy and we all know how the feds feel about sports betting

I think the thrust of Cronley's piece is that racing could take lessons from Fantasy Football on how to market itself.

Ain't no court decided that yet. But in states like Michigan the GCB there (or whatever they are called) seemed to think they have the ability to ban it...and they're right.

The amount of money invested in these companies and the names/power of those doing so is a pretty clear indication of their interpretation of the law. This new industry is not overseas poker companies illegally using banks to send money back and forth. There is a defined "loophole" in the law that allows this to happen and with so much investment and involvement from powerful people, companies, organizations etc., all of the above would be a good indication the stability of the law was vetted profusely.

This is not to say that the government won't step in but even if they do, it's not going away.
