Default Creator retired, sold to Japan; WinStar says 'no mas' for Exaggerator

http://www.drf.com/news/belmont-stak...red-sold-japan

Creator, winner of the 2016 Belmont Stakes, has been sold to the Japan Bloodhorse Breeders’ Association, which intends to retire the colt from racing and stand him at Shizunai Stallion Station in Hokkaido, Japan, for the 2017 breeding season.

The 3-year-old son of Tapit finishes his career with 3 wins in 12 starts for earnings of $1,610,320. He was trained by Steve Asmussen.

In addition to his Belmont victory, Creator won the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby and finished third in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes. The colt competed in this year’s Kentucky Derby and made his final start in the Travers Stakes, where he finished seventh.

Creator was previously owned by WinStar Farm and celebrity chef Bobby Flay. Flay bought into the horse just days before his Belmont victory.

“The JBBA approached us with a strong desire to stand a top Grade 1-winning son of Tapit like Creator, and since we already have one on our stallion roster with Constitution, it was ultimately too good of an opportunity to pass up for everyone involved, including the horse,” WinStar Farm president and CEO Elliot Walden said. “Last year, we visited the JBBA, and I was impressed with their facilities and overall program. They’ve done such a great job with American horses like Empire Maker and Forty Niner, and we hope Creator can have a similar impact for Japan and its breeders.”

Creator was bred in Kentucky by Mt. Brilliant Broodmares and is the first foal to race out of the three-time Peruvian champion Privately Held mare Morena. He is from the extended family of Peruvian Group 3 winners La Querella and La Consulta.

Creator was a $440,000 purchase out of the 2014 Keeneland September yearling sale.

I get it is a business. Still would have loved to see him run at 4 and see what he could have developed into.

I would have liked to see him finish out his 3-year old year. Maybe even run in the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

I guess someone knows that the long range forecast for Breeders Cup day is fast and firm.

PRIVMAN: Exaggerator, the winner of the Preakness Stakes and the only 3-year-old male to win three Grade 1 races this year, was officially retired on Monday and will stand at stud beginning next year at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky., it was announced by WinStar.

The announcement was not a surprise, as Exaggerator had been taken out of training two weeks ago following a disappointing performance in the Pennsylvania Derby and had been taken to WinStar, which had taken over control of Exaggerator’s career.

Exaggerator, a son of Curlin out of the Vindication mare Dawn Raid, also won the Santa Anita Derby and Haskell Invitational at Monmouth earlier this year. He also finished second in the Kentucky Derby to Nyquist, but was 11th in the Belmont Stakes. The Haskell was his last victory. He subsequently was 11th in the Travers Stakes and seventh in the Pennsylvania Derby

Last year, at age 2, Exaggerator won the Saratoga Special and the Delta Jackpot.

Exaggerator retires with six wins in 15 starts and earnings of $3,581,120. His five stakes wins, all graded stakes, came at five different racetracks.

A full story will be posted in a bit at drf.com

I'm sure Nyquist won't be back either. What's a fabulous 3YO crop.

Looking through the big mare sales coming after the Breeders Cup doesn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy, either. Lady Eli, Stellar Wind, Cathryn Sophia, Celestine, Paola Queen, Royal Obsession. Hopefully some of those won't go through the ring.
