It wasn't really ever a ban, just a lack of funding for the inspectors necessary for the facilities to operate. This is about money and partisanship. The states with slaughterhouses want the money. The states out west with GOP reps are claiming it'll help with control the wild horse population (it won't, but they'll use this with their voters). The guy that flipped was a Republican from Miami. Gee I wonder if this had anything to do with the Cuban vote? Horse meat is supported in that community and pet horses get stolen and killed for it to sell on the black market. Whenever I see anybody try to claim it's more humane to slaughter them here I'm just disgusted. The act of slaughtering a horse can never be anything other than barbaric. It's physically impossible. The act alone is particularly rough on them, but horses aren't psychologically equipped to be anything other than terrorized from start to finish. Work to prevent their transport abroad rather than support American slaughter. Last time I checked, PETA was pro-slaughter because they claimed at least they wouldn't suffer in transit. Suffering is non-negotiable as part of horse slaughter. It's the stuff of nightmares. |
