8/14: Saratoga Steeplechase R1 Jonathan Sheppard
Finally, the big steeplechase race of the meet, The Jonathan Sheppard Handicap, is on schedule to run 2 ⅜ miles around 5 turns over 9 jumps. Light weighted runners have traditionally done well in this race.
#4 Zarak The Brave makes his American debut and will have to navigate the quick pace and sharp turns at Saratoga but is the highest rated runner at 152. He should be giving the rest of the field at least 8 pounds but he is giving 4-18 pounds. #4 Zarak The Brave would prefer good to yielding turf so firm turf with average flat track speed rating may reveal a chink in his armor. #1 Too Friendly also makes his American debut and will be ready for trainer Leslie Young. He has above average flat track speed, has a 134 hurdle rating in England, and gets a 10 pound weight break from #4 Zarak The Brave. #6 Pickanumber got cooked on the lead in the Steinman by West Newton over the same course and distance will not get the same pace pressure today and will be able to relax on the front end. He was jumping well while running wide and giving up ground around the turns. #3 Abaan, (3rd) #5 Jimmy P (WON $14.00) and #7 Going Country (2nd) can be used at the bottom of tris and supers. Selection: A) 1 - 6 B) 4 (fell) Good luck at the races!
