Yes, Sailors Sunset went head and head in :43 3/5 and still won that race against Smokey Stover. Not only that, he beat Midnight Lute at Del Mar.
Sailors Sunset was my second choice today. I bet Declan to win and played a one-way exacta from Declan to Sailors Sunset. I'm pissed off at myself for not making a small win bet on SS. Often times in a situation like that, I would bet both horses. I just figured that SS would probably kill himself on the lead with Premium Saltine, so I didn't end up betting anything on him to win.
I should know from experience that if you think a horse is a serious contender and the horse is a big price, you should at least make a small bet on the horse, even if you are nervous about the pace scenario. The pace does not always end up going the way you expect. I remember back in the 2003 Ky Derby, I liked War Emblem because I thought he was the best horse, but I thought there might be too much pace for him in the race. He ended up getting an easy lead and he won the race at 20-1. I ended up only betting $50 to win on him. I cut my bet way down because I didn't think the race set up well for him with all the speed. At least I bet something on him. I didn't get totally off of him. That's what I usually do in a situation like that. If I like a longshot, I will at least make a small bet on them even if I don't think the pace scenario will suit them.
