Default Bad mishap at Golden Gate today?

I'm checking for details now, but just logged on to see the replay of the California Derby.

Noted that Russell Baze was replaced "at the last minute" by David Lopez....who went on to ride the winner Bwana Bull.

I clicked on the race prior for a clue, and the replay cuts out the video, but the real time track announcer noted Baze's mount "lost his jockey," and only four of the 8 or 9 horses finished the race.

Just a quick update that I am finding no further information on local TV web news and sports sites on the 8th race Golden Gate spill today.

I take to mean good news on at least the well being of the jockeys involved.

The replay can be seen on calracing.com. I remember hearing the announcer say Baze, Garcia, and Lumpkins were able to get back on their feet.

Race 8, Claire Simoff, ridden by Jorge Ayarza, fell over American Ivy at the three-eighths pole. Kendrick's Patsy, ridden by Martin Garcia, also tripped over American Ivy and fell. Ivy League Genius, with Baze aboard, couldn't avoid the fallen Kendrick's Patsy and went down.

American Ivy had to be euthanized. Claire Simoff, Kendrick's Patsy and Ivy League Genius were not injured. The chain reaction eliminated half of the eight-horse field.

(Midwest Blast broke down at the quarter pole in the 7th race)

I was watching the race (on the computer) when it happened and originally thought Garcia's horse had clipped heals with American Ivy and that's what brought them all down... I watched the race replay after reading the final chart and it was horribly facinating to watch - American Ivy was a beautiful gray so it was easy to identify her (that and I was watching her becuase I had $$ on her) and it looked like she just ran down a hill...her head dropped a little and she just sunk down - and then the chain reaction started. Garcia did a great job of rolling away from the stampede after he went over his horses head.

It was just sad to watch. American Ivy was an amazingly fit horse having just run a 5f bullet of :59.4 on the 20th and also had just won a 40K alw less than a month ago. She was a beautiful 4 y.o. who was on the verge of doing very well in Northern California under Art Sherman. Another sad loss for the racing world.

RIP American Ivy

Seven, Echo, and DerbyCat...

a belated Thank You for the replies.

Barbaro's passing sort of took the wind out of my sails for logging on here for a couple of days.

Not to diminish at all the passing of American Ivy.

Thank goodness this sport is like the airline industry in that well over 99% of the flights do just fine.
