Default Turfway Park cancels Friday card

Turfway Park has cancelled racing for this evening.

Just as a footnote they did not have training over the track on Wednesday and Thursday.

The president of Turfway Park -- Bob Elliston -- said the same thing a year or two ago when they were pushing for slots at the track. Threatened that without the slots the track could be sold for retail development.

Nice that these tracks hire track presidents that love racing and believe in the future or racing.

This is the same guy who last year was blowing everyone's dress up about how great the poly was. What's he saying now?

Beulah (80 miles north of Polyway) did run today. So did the other dirt tracks.

Now that's funny.

Too much racing in the U.S. has watered down the product to no end.

That land is too valuable, if the Keeneland group would not have purchased it Jerry Carrol would have sold it by now...Nobody wants to live in Cincinnati anymore and we are all moving to Northern Kentucky...Besides, I am moving there this Summer, that's has to raise property values by 20-30%....

The track is frozen solid. I walked out on it about an hour ago and you couldnt see my footprints (190). I kicked the harrowed poly and couldnt open the track. Its frozen solid, not stiff, frozen solid. The track has held water, and the water has inturn froze the spandex, carpet, and rubber tires. If they run tomorrow Ill be shocked to death, however mum is the word. Nobody would say one way or the other, but my personal opinion is absolutely no shot they run.

They worked the track throughout the day, its a complete mess.

Yes, Beulah, NY, Charlestown, all ran cards. They dont have a frozen carpet, unfortunately Turfway does and they are still lying about it.

2/16 6am update. They had about an inch and a half of snow here over the night, they are currently working the track.

Horses are out, track seems bad, but they aer going to try to run I do believe. 730

If the Poly really is frozen, that's tough to defend. But!!!!!

Remember what spurred Turfway to install the material. It was what? 3 or 4 years ago when they got battared by winter storms for 2 straight weeks, and it madfe the track so un-rideable, that they canclled cards for about that long. They cancelled cards for awhile. So they had to try something new. These guys install the stuff today in the name of "safety", which it might still be. But I think Turfyway put it in in the first place just to have a track that was "rideable" and could stand up to some of the elements. It looks like now it might be backfiring.

Another thing to ask... I'm sure it's almost as cold in Lexington. Is their poly in just as bad of shape I wonder...

Yes it is. They didnt help the surface by tinkering with it, but its not an all weather track. They are training now, Im amazed. Jost jogging, hopefully they can save this weekends card, but I highly doubt it

Me too. The positive news- For the first time in literally 3 weeks here in Minneapolis, it's gonna get over 20 today (after literally sub zero temps everyday). It's even supposed to get to over 30 by Mon. So I'm assuming that same at least somwhat more mild weather is heading towards Kentucky.

Hopefully that'll at least things at least sorta unbearable ass opposed to totally unbearbale lol.

It's obvious the changes they made aren't for the better. That being said last year the winter weather was very mild so the poly didn't really get tested. This year it is.

Actually, one thing to point out before and conspiracy theories run around is that the weather last winter was nothing compared to this winter.

I think what probably happened was that the first winter that Turfway had the Poly it was a very, very easy winter, and that made the stats look really good. Now this winter, things are different, and they are having a really, really bad winter, which is going to make the stats look horrible.

I am not sure where the will be in 5 years, because I think that the normal winters are somewhere in the middle, but those stats will play out over time.

Just my $0.02 worth...

...now in Arizona, because those damn winters in Ohio were too much for me...

Default Breakdown in the 10th yesterday (2/17/07)

I was watching Turfway yesterday and there was a pretty nasty spill in the 10th. Anyone heard if the Jockey and/or horse were OK?
